START EARLY: You should know early that you are designed to be a model, and you must be very passionate about modeling to get far in this career. 16- 25 years are the usual age bracket.
WORK WITH AN AGENCY: While it’s true that some models work directly with clients, few get along well in their career without an agency. Models need an agency that grooms their talent as well as promote them at all-times.
WORK WITH THE BEST PHOTOGRAPHERS: Since a models photo is what opens doors to modeling jobs, it’s important for a model to be photographed by top professional photographers who usually know what clients wants.
BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD: Every top model will tell you it’s tough to be in the business. Competition is more in modeling than in most careers, so be prepared to work hard. The pay is good too.
GET A SPONSOR OR SPONSOR YOURSELF: Test photos, composite cards, modeling classes, conventions and a whole lot of marketing tools can cost a model some money. Start up cost in Nigeria is presently between N30, 000 - N50, 000 depending on which agency or photographers are working for you.
KEEP UPDATING YOUR PHOTOS/PORTFOLIO: Any model that wants work with a variety of clients will have to do several photos that reflect a variety of look. You need at least three varieties of looks, and you must like being in front of a camera.
NEVER DESPISE ANY OPPORTUNITY FOR WORK: As long as you are not working for free, be prepared to do jobs that may not pay as much as you want. It could be a starting point to great paying million dollar jobs. Every job adds to your career profile.
READ: I told a friend recently how top models have to keep reading to remain ahead. Readers are leaders in every field. Learn everything about your career in books, magazines, TV, internet etc.
BE PREPARED TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY: Be prepared to work independently. You are your own boss. Not every one will understand why you should be modeling. Keep your friends and loved ones abreast with your career advancement but don’t expect total support from everyone.
RESPECT, RESPECT, RESPECT: You never get respect from who you despise. Since your work entails working with people, you must put on a positive and friendly attitude with all people.
AIM VERY HIGH: You can’t have a high flying modeling career without a great ambition to be ahead. I can tell how far a model will get by looking at the level of their ambition and persistence.
LOOK LIKE YOUR PHOTOS: Some models have great photos but their look is ridiculous. While your photos will open doors for you, your appearance, look, confidence, personality, and beauty are what clients look for. Let your look be as great as your photos.
